Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate that the effect of newly formulated humectant with sorbitol and oligosaccharide on the growth of oral microorganism. The Gram positive facultative cocci and cariogenic bacteria, Streptococcus mutans KCTC 3065, and candidiasis(bleeding gum, dry mouth and tongue, thrush) inducing bacteria, Candida albicans KCTC 7122, were used in this study.
The results were as follows
1) Practically Streptococcus mutans KCTC 3065 fermented sorbitol to give a final pH of below 5.0.
2) Enrichment of humectant with 20% oligosaccharide resulted in similar decreasing rate of pH of culture broth than that of pure sorbitol by S. mutans KCTC 3065 and it was also higher value than the critical caries inducing pH value(pH 5.5).
3) However, the humectant has little effect on the growth of Candida albicans KCTC 7122 than that of S. mutans KCTC 3065.
4) Other properties such as moisture content, viscosity and non-crystalline trends were more suitable for toothpaste¢¥s humectant.
In conclusion, formulation of low crystallizing and low cariogenic humectant using pure sorbitol and 20% oligosaccharide was accomplished. This may explain that oligosaccharide is an alternative inhibitor of the cariogenecity and crystallization of pure sorbitol without various sorbitol¢¥s properties deterioration.
